No Peace or Know Peace?
37"(BC)He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.
38"And (BD)he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.
39"(BE)He who has found his life will lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake will find it.
~ Matthew 10:37-39
This passage is about the call to discipleship. How it's going to take something so selfless and bold to follow in Jesus' footsteps. It's not going to be easy by any means, it's absolutely tough. But He encourages us to do so.
I'm at a very low right now. Two days ago my wife started bleeding and we feared our baby was at risk. The bleeding subsided yesterday but we went in for a meeting with the doctor and she delivered the bad news, baby had no heartbeat and wasn't growing. We later went for a second ultrasound later that day but the results weren't shared. Now it's Friday and we're waiting for the doctor's phone call. We're supposed to go into the office and discuss the report and see what the best course of action is. In all likelihood, we lost our baby.
This scripture as well as the Psalm 141 reading this morning really spoke to my heart. As God's written word was encouraging believers to stand their ground as disciples, He was also speaking to us about standing firm against the devil's attacks. We cannot be shallow or rocky soil; we need to be good soil that has deep roots. I cannot lead this family into turning away from Jesus even though the flesh is stirring up all kinds of reasons to quit. God said in scripture this morning that He did not come to bring peace. This peace that's spoken about is the earthly peace as we know it. It's the feel-good emotion that reveals harmony. But God didn't bring this. The peace God brings is a faithful confidence, an assurance that this world is temporary and the eternal peace awaits.
Father God, I am broken. My wife is broken. I don't know what else to do but cry out to You, as in Psalm 141:1-2. Our peace is with You, not the world. Amen.
